Eating Disorders

Eating Disorders are complicated.  Eating disorder behaviors---like restricting food, vomiting after meals, bingeing on large amounts of food, exercising in excess, etc --- are the result of deeper issues.  The eating disorder behaviors are the symptoms, not the problem.  It's not about the food.  It's not about weight.  The behaviors are a means of communication, a way to get needs met, or a means for coping with uncomfortable emotions.  Usually what lies beneath the surface is psychological pain, self-hatred, distorted thinking and/or a lost sense of the true/authentic self.

Treatment for an Eating Disorder begins with acknowledging that you have a problem and realizing that this "Friend" that you once had total control over has taken control of your life.  It may seem overwhelming and impossible to fight this disease alone.  Together, in your therapy, we will explore the root of you eating disorder.  I will assist you in learning more positive ways to cope and communicate.  You will begin to uncover your healthy self that you've lost touch with by restructuring your thinking, learning to accept your body and finding your voice. When appropriate, I can also assist with referrals for Psychiatrists, Physicians and/or Registered Dieticians.
